The Justice Department announced on October 16 that 10 aliens have been charged in the Eastern District of North Carolina for illegally voting in federal elections and falsely claiming U.S. citizenship. The cases form part of a larger set of charges involving 16 aliens across North Carolina, New York, and Idaho.

Eduardd Omar Majano Sosa, 22, an illegal alien from El Salvador, is charged with falsely claiming citizenship to vote and voting by an alien. Prosecutors say he registered in 2024 and voted in the 2024 general election. He was in possession of a firearm at the time of arrest and faces additional charges.

Gjina Gojcaj McDonald, 60, a lawful permanent resident and national of the former Yugoslavia, is charged with the same two counts. She allegedly registered in 2008 and voted in multiple elections from 2008 through 2024, including general elections, a 2019 special election, and a 2012 primary. Other defendants include natives of Germany, Jamaica, Haiti, Panama, and Canada, most of them lawful permanent residents. Several are alleged to have voted in multiple elections dating back years; one is alleged to have voted in nine elections.

U.S. Attorney Ellis Boyle and Attorney General Todd Blanche highlighted the cases. FBI Director Kash Patel said protecting American elections from criminal interference remains a top priority. Each count of falsely claiming citizenship carries a maximum of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine; voting by an alien carries up to one year and a $100,000 fine. All defendants are presumed innocent.

The indictments come weeks before the 2026 midterms. North Carolina is a competitive Senate battleground. The charges follow earlier DOJ actions on noncitizen voting this month.
