WASHINGTON — The Department of Justice has firmly denied opening a criminal perjury investigation into writer E. Jean Carroll regarding statements she made during her civil lawsuits against President Donald Trump.

In a direct response to inquiries from Just the News, a DOJ spokesperson stated there is currently no criminal investigation into Carroll for perjury. The denial addresses recent reports suggesting federal prosecutors were examining whether Carroll lied under oath about third-party funding of her legal actions.

The controversy stems from Carroll’s 2022 deposition, in which she testified that no outside parties were helping finance her lawsuits against Trump. Later revelations showed that billionaire Reid Hoffman provided substantial financial support through his nonprofit organization, American Future Republic.

U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros, who oversees the Northern District of Illinois where Hoffman’s nonprofit is based, also addressed the matter: “We are not investigating E. Jean Carroll for perjury. Any suggestion otherwise is inaccurate.”

While the DOJ has confirmed it is conducting a separate review into Hoffman’s American Future Republic for potential tax compliance and disclosure issues related to its funding of high-profile litigation, officials stressed this review is not a criminal probe targeting Carroll herself.

Carroll won two civil defamation cases against Trump: a $5 million judgment in 2023 for sexual abuse and defamation, and an $83.3 million additional defamation award in 2024. Both verdicts were upheld on appeal.

Trump has repeatedly called Carroll’s accusations fabricated and politically motivated. His legal team has pointed to apparent inconsistencies in her funding disclosures as raising serious questions.

The DOJ’s denial appears intended to push back against claims that the Trump administration is pursuing retaliatory criminal charges. However, the separate civil and administrative review of Hoffman’s nonprofit continues.

No charges have been filed against Carroll or Hoffman. The situation remains under review as the Justice Department examines high-profile cases and funding arrangements from the previous administration.
