DOJ Cracks Down on Voter Roll Chaos to Secure 2026 Elections
The DOJ’s Civil Rights Division, led by Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, is spearheading the effort, sending letters to states like California, Wisconsin, Utah, and New Hampshire to address lax voter roll maintenance.

The Department of Justice, under Attorney General Pam Bondi, has launched a nationwide initiative to clean voter rolls, targeting duplicates, outdated registrations, and noncitizens to ensure fair and secure elections in 2026. This aggressive push, driven by President Trump’s March 2025 executive order, demands states comply with federal laws to maintain accurate voter lists.
The DOJ’s Civil Rights Division, led by Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, is spearheading the effort, sending letters to states like California, Wisconsin, Utah, and New Hampshire to address lax voter roll maintenance. “Clean voter rolls are the foundation for secure elections,” a DOJ source stated, noting a history of noncompliance by some states. Dhillon emphasized, “I’m committed to making it harder to cheat and easier to vote.”
Wisconsin faced scrutiny for failing to comply with the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), particularly for not providing a process to address voter integrity complaints, prompting threats to withhold federal election funds. In California, Orange County resisted DOJ demands for data on noncitizens registered to vote, leading to a federal lawsuit after officials cited privacy protections. Utah and Wisconsin publicly shared DOJ correspondence, while New Hampshire’s Secretary of State David Scanlan rejected a request for voter data, citing state law.
The initiative follows alarming discoveries, such as Texas identifying over 100 noncitizens who cast more than 200 ballots in past elections. A 2024 Michigan case exposed a Chinese national, legally in the U.S., voting via same-day registration, resulting in voter fraud charges. Declassified documents also revealed the FBI’s failure to fully investigate China’s alleged 2020 election interference through mail-in ballot schemes.
Despite legal pushback from Democrat-led states, with a Massachusetts judge temporarily blocking parts of Trump’s order, the DOJ is appealing to restore its authority. This crackdown is a critical step to restore trust in our elections, ensuring only eligible citizens vote and safeguarding the integrity of our democracy.
