Authorities have identified the perpetrator of Wednesday's deadly shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church as 23-year-old Robin Westman, a transgender individual born male who legally changed his name from Robert in 2020 to align with his female identity. The attack, during a morning mass attended by schoolchildren on their first week back, resulted in the deaths of two young students, aged 8 and 10, and injuries to 17 others, including 14 children and three elderly adults. Westman, equipped with a rifle, shotgun, and pistol, fired through the church's stained-glass windows before entering the sanctuary, barricading doors with wooden planks to trap victims inside. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the parking lot after discharging dozens of rounds.

FBI Director Kash Patel classified the incident as domestic terrorism and a hate crime against Catholics, vowing ongoing updates. Investigators recovered additional firearms from three Minneapolis residences linked to Westman on August 28. His mother, a former church employee who retired in 2021, had no immediate comment. Police Chief Brian O’Hara noted Westman was not previously known to law enforcement and acted alone, with no ongoing threat. All injured children are expected to survive, though seven remain in critical condition at local hospitals. Community vigils drew crowds on August 27 evening, with mourners placing flowers and candles at the site still scarred by bullet holes.

Hours before the rampage, Westman uploaded disturbing videos to YouTube under "Robin W," including a manifesto-like notebook tour captioned "so long and thanks for all the fish." The footage, removed by YouTube around 11 a.m. ET on August 27, featured Westman muttering incoherently, giggling, and vaping while flipping through pages filled with Russian and English entries, gun sketches, attack diagrams, and a transgender "defend equality" flag sticker. He expressed deep fascination with mass shooters, particularly Sandy Hook perpetrator Adam Lanza, calling it his "favorite" and admitting an obsession with school shootings. Westman detailed suicidal thoughts spanning years, stating the attack was a "final act" for personal satisfaction, not a message: "I do it to please myself. I do it because I am sick." He denied racial motivations but admitted discomfort with people of color.

Westman's weapons bore hateful inscriptions, including anti-Trump messages like "Kill Donald Trump" on magazines. Anti-Semitic phrases such as "Burn Israel," "6 million wasn't enough" (alluding to the Holocaust), and pro-Palestine slogans appeared on barrels and clips. Anti-Christian elements included "for the children" scrawled on ammo and a shooting target with Jesus Christ's face. In one clip, Westman stabbed a church drawing repeatedly, foreshadowing the target. The manifesto ended with apologies to his family, self-deprecating labels like "sick fuck" and "murderer," and a sense of finality: "It’s over."

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem described it as an assault on "our most vulnerable: young children praying," targeting faith and freedom. President Trump called the tragedy "unspeakable," ordering flags at half-staff and committing federal aid. A survivor recounted a friend shielding him, sustaining injuries in the process.

This incident echoes the 2023 Covenant School shooting in Nashville, where a trans-identifying attacker killed six, with a manifesto revealing obsessions with transgenderism and privilege. Motive probes continue, focusing on Westman's online activity and mental health history.
