Cornyn Signals He Will Stay in Texas Senate Race Despite Trump’s Endorsement of Paxton
Trump announced his support for Paxton on Tuesday, calling him a “true MAGA Warrior” who has “ALWAYS delivered for Texas.”

AUSTIN, Texas — Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, indicated Tuesday he has no plans to exit the Republican primary runoff for U.S. Senate even after President Donald Trump endorsed his challenger, Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Trump announced his support for Paxton on Tuesday, calling him a “true MAGA Warrior” who has “ALWAYS delivered for Texas.” He described Cornyn as “a good man” but noted the incumbent was not fully supportive during difficult times. The endorsement came just days before early voting begins in the May 26 runoff.
Cornyn’s campaign quickly responded that he remains fully committed to the race. Aides said the senator will continue campaigning aggressively across Texas, emphasizing his legislative record, experience, and ability to deliver for the state in Washington.
Cornyn has highlighted his high vote alignment with Trump (over 99% during the first term) and his work on border security, judicial confirmations, and conservative priorities. He has positioned himself as the candidate best equipped to win the general election against the expected Democratic nominee.
The runoff pits the more establishment-oriented Cornyn against the firebrand Paxton, a vocal Trump ally who survived an impeachment trial in 2023. Trump’s intervention significantly boosts Paxton’s momentum in the deeply conservative state.
Cornyn has not conceded or indicated any willingness to step aside. With the primary runoff less than a week away, the race remains highly competitive despite the president’s high-profile endorsement. Republicans are watching closely as the outcome could influence the party’s direction heading into the 2026 midterms.
