Christopher Rufo: California’s Fraud Problem Is Systemic and “Stealing from Taxpayers” (Video)

“This is not accidental,” Rufo said. “California is stealing from its taxpayers. The system is designed to move money to favored constituencies rather than solve the underlying problems.”

WASHINGTON — Investigative journalist Christopher Rufo told Pod Force One host Miranda Devine that California’s systemic fraud and waste represent an entirely different scale of corruption than even the high-profile Minnesota feeding program scandal.

In a wide-ranging interview on the “Pod Force One,” a podcast hosted by New York Post columnist Miranda Devine, Rufo detailed how one-party Democratic rule in California has enabled massive diversion of taxpayer dollars through benefit programs, homelessness initiatives, and public contracting. He described the state’s fraud problem as deeply entrenched and politically protected.

Rufo specifically highlighted how California’s benefit scams dwarf Minnesota’s notorious Feeding Our Future case, calling the Golden State’s issues “another level entirely.” He pointed to enormous sums lost in programs like food stamps, Medi-Cal, and homelessness spending, where audits have repeatedly shown high fraud rates, poor oversight, and funds flowing to politically connected nonprofits with little measurable impact on the ground.

“The scale of it in the state of California is just another level entirely,” Rufo said.

The conversation also covered vote farming tactics, including offers of services and benefits to non-citizens and migrants to secure political power, as well as broader patterns of Democratic governance failures in blue strongholds. Rufo warned that unchecked fraud in California serves as a cautionary tale for the rest of the country.

Throughout the episode, Rufo contrasted California’s situation with Minnesota’s, where he played a key role exposing widespread fraud in child nutrition programs. He argued that California’s problems are more severe due to the sheer size of its budget, weaker accountability mechanisms, and entrenched political interests.

Rufo, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, has built a national reputation for exposing institutional failures through investigative reporting. His latest work focuses on government waste, DEI programs, and public policy breakdowns in major blue cities and states.

The Pod Force One interview underscores growing conservative scrutiny of how taxpayer money is managed in Democrat-led states amid rising costs and visible governance failures. Rufo continues his investigative efforts through the Manhattan Institute and public advocacy.
