Calls Intensify for Rep. Eric Swalwell to Exit California Governor’s Race After Sexual Assault Allegations
Swalwell has strongly denied the allegations, calling them “completely false and politically motivated.”

WASHINGTON – Growing calls are emerging for Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) to drop out of the 2026 California gubernatorial race following new sexual assault allegations made by a former congressional staffer.
The woman, who worked in Swalwell’s office from 2019 to 2021, filed a formal complaint with the House Ethics Committee alleging that Swalwell sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions. The accuser claims that during one incident, Swalwell pinned her against a wall and forced himself on her. She alleges the behavior occurred while she was a subordinate and that Swalwell used his position of power to intimidate her into silence.
Swalwell has strongly denied the allegations, calling them “completely false and politically motivated.” In a statement released on April 10, 2026, he said he welcomes the Ethics Committee’s review and will fully cooperate with any investigation.
The accusations have prompted several California Democrats and political observers to publicly urge Swalwell to withdraw from the governor’s race. Critics argue that the serious nature of the claims, combined with his past controversies, make him a liability for the party in what is expected to be a highly competitive race.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has long been a close political ally of Swalwell, has not issued a direct statement on the allegations but is reportedly advising him to consider stepping aside to avoid a prolonged and damaging scandal.
The latest controversy adds to a series of issues surrounding Swalwell, including his past relationship with suspected Chinese intelligence operative Christine Fang and criticism over his role on the January 6 Select Committee. Swalwell announced his candidacy for governor earlier this year, positioning himself as a leading progressive voice in the Democratic primary field.
As of April 10, Swalwell has given no indication he plans to drop out of the race. The House Ethics Committee has confirmed it has received the complaint and is reviewing the matter.
The allegations have not been proven in court, and Swalwell continues to maintain his innocence. The story is developing as the Ethics Committee investigation proceeds and the 2026 California gubernatorial race heats up.
