WASHINGTON – The Pentagon is preparing to deploy approximately 3,000 troops from the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division’s Immediate Response Force to the Middle East to support ongoing operations related to Iran.

Reports from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and other sources indicate senior military officials are weighing the move as prudent planning. A formal deployment order is described as imminent, with Maj. Gen. Brandon Tegtmeier, the division commander, and elements of the headquarters staff included.

The 82nd Airborne, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, serves as the Army’s primary rapid-response unit, capable of deploying globally within 18-24 hours, including airborne insertions to secure key sites.

The preparations expand President Donald Trump’s military options amid U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian leadership and infrastructure since February 28, 2026. Potential missions include reopening the Strait of Hormuz or securing sites like Kharg Island, which handles about 90% of Iran’s oil exports and has been targeted by U.S. forces.

Officials stress no final decision has been made to insert U.S. ground troops into Iran itself. The Pentagon has not publicly confirmed the plans.
