Army Submits Final Plans to Reinstall Confederate Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery
The Office of Army Cemeteries submitted its final design proposal to the Commission of Fine Arts for returning the Moses Ezekiel Confederate Memorial to Section 16 of Arlington National Cemetery in early 2027.

The U.S. Army has submitted its final proposal to restore and reinstall the Confederate Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery, advancing a Trump administration decision to reverse the 2023 removal.
The Office of Army Cemeteries presented a 23-page proposal to the Commission of Fine Arts detailing location, elevation, conservation, and installation logistics. The bronze sculpture by Moses Ezekiel, a Jewish Confederate veteran and VMI graduate, will return to its granite base in Section 16, the area containing the reinterred remains of more than 400 Confederate soldiers. Reinstallation is targeted for early 2027 after conservation work that includes cleaning, structural repairs, and new interpretive signage.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced last year that the memorial would return, stating it “never should have been taken down by woke lemmings” and that the administration does not believe in erasing American history. The statue had been removed in December 2023 following a congressionally mandated commission’s recommendation under the Biden administration to eliminate Confederate symbols from military property.
The Army has previously estimated restoration costs around $10 million. The proposal focuses on refurbishing the existing sculpture and base rather than full reconstruction, with added historical context panels.
The Commission of Fine Arts reviewed the final design this week. No final installation date beyond the 2027 target has been announced.
