Authorities arrested a 38-year-old man at Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, on Sunday after he was observed walking the grounds, taking photographs and videos, and appearing to monitor security planning activities two days before President Donald Trump’s scheduled visit.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies from the Lomita Station responded around 3:30 p.m. on August 2 after plainclothes federal agents reported a suspicious individual on the property. The man was identified as Jeanine John Taele of Downey. Deputies found a 16-round magazine loaded with hollow-point ammunition in his pants pocket. A subsequent search of his vehicle, parked in the golf club lot, recovered a loaded pistol with a round in the chamber and an additional magazine containing hollow-point ammunition.

Taele was arrested on suspicion of carrying a concealed firearm and possession of prohibited ammunition. Authorities also noted that he was already under investigation by the El Segundo Police Department in connection with a robbery case.

On Monday, detectives from the Sheriff’s Department Major Crimes Bureau, assigned to the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, executed a search warrant at Taele’s residence in Downey due to the potential security implications of the incident. Investigators recovered an illegally modified AR-style rifle, a .45-caliber pistol, an AR platform upper receiver, body armor, high-capacity magazines, bulk quantities of pistol and rifle ammunition, two radio signal devices, and multiple notebooks containing what the Sheriff’s Department described as “concerning statements.”

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department publicly announced the arrest on Tuesday, August 4, as President Trump prepared to arrive in Southern California for a Republican National Committee fundraising dinner scheduled that evening at the same Rancho Palos Verdes golf course. Officials stated there is no credible ongoing threat to the community.

The incident occurred amid heightened security preparations for the president’s visit. Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles, located on the Palos Verdes Peninsula south of Los Angeles, has hosted previous events involving the president. The combination of Taele’s observed monitoring of security activities, the firearms and ammunition recovered at the scene and his residence, and the notebooks has drawn investigative attention from both local and federal authorities. Taele was being held on $250,000 bail, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for later in August. All charges remain allegations at this stage, and the investigation continues. The Sheriff’s Department emphasized that the response was driven by the unusual circumstances surrounding the individual’s presence and behavior on the grounds in the days leading up to the high-profile event.
